The Book Industry Study Group’s (BISG) pioneering research survey Consumer Attitudes Toward E-Book Reading has been providing trend line data from hundreds of e-book consumers since November 2009. The survey, conducted 3 times over the course of 9 months, asks questions of print book consumers about their current interest in and preference for various kinds of digital content, and the factors that influence their e-book reading habits and purchasing decisions.

During this session, BISG highlights new findings from the survey’s 3rd fielding, describing the ways in which book readers have altered their e-book consumption over the past 6 months in relation to how and where they acquire e-books, which genres they prefer, whether Digital Rights Management matters, and many other specific issues related to attitudes and preferences. This session will benefit those tasked with refining digital strategies, as well as those simply curious about how e-book readers are buying and reading digital content.

A Conversation about the Agency Model

There has been widespread discussion throughout the book industry and beyond concerning the adoption of an agency model for the sale of eBooks. To date only a few major publishing companies are in the process of implementing this new business model, but the issue has raised many questions concerning how this model works, what the benefits are, and what new requirements are made on the publisher and the retailer or e-tailer.

The implications are also unclear: does it tip the vendor/publisher relationship on its head? Watch this informal conversation among four astute industry observers and stakeholders, as they attempt to level-set our understanding of this business model innovation and discuss its implication in the context of its application in other media verticals, especially the music industry.

This event was moderated by Scott Lubeck, Executive Director, BISG. Lubeck was joined on the panel by Michael Cader, Publishers Lunch; Bob Kohn, Royaltyshare; and Dominique Raccah, Sourcebooks, Inc.

The Consumer Demand Chain: Thriving in the New World Publishing Order

The supply chain in the publishing industry is undergoing significant change. Change that is coming from multiple directions all at once. The world economy and the decrease in discretionary spending, the competition for reading amongst many media and entertainment choices, and, most significantly, the expanding diversification in content be it digital, print-on-demand, or traditional print. Additionally, consumer access to books and content has never been more diverse… all of this leading to a shifting of the traditional supply chain to a new world publishing order where the consumer defines where, when, and how to served.

This presentation by Kelly Gallagher, VP – Publisher Services, RR Bowker, will seek to cover details and data, and perspective around this fast changing consumer driven market.
